Cyber Defenders Warn About Smart Cameras and Baby Monitors

https://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Criminals can watch baby monitors and smart cameras over the internet by default, security chiefs notify. The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) is cautioning people to adjust the settings after buying them. Easy-to-guess default passwords might permit a hacker to see a home via connected devices secretly, it said. Dr. Ian Levy, The NCSC’s technical director, warned though the devices were “fantastic innovations,” they were susceptible to cyber-attackers. There are many cases of devices being accessed without permission. In one instance, the attacker spoke to a young girl, acting as if to be Father Christmas. In another, a pair from Leeds had been watched thousands of times online without their knowledge. And security researchers easily penetrated an adult toy that had a […]

Smart Ring — To Track Your Finger’s Location

https://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Smart technology keeps getting tinier. There are smartwatches, smartphones and now, smart rings, devices that let someone use simple finger gestures to run other technology. Researchers from the University of Washington have made AuraRing, a ring and wristband combination that can detect the exact location of someone’s index finger and regularly track hand movements. The ring releases a signal that can be picked up on the wristband, which can then detect the position and orientation of the ring — and the finger it’s connected to. The research team published these outcomes Dec. 11 in Proceedings of the ACM on Interactive, Wearable, Mobile and Ubiquitous Technologies. “We’re deliberating about the next generation of computing platforms,” said co-lead author Eric Whitmire, who completed this study as […]

WT2 Plus Earbuds Translate Across 35 Languages And 85 Accents

https://ift.tt/eA8V8J

The Babel fish, from Douglas Adams’ superb Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, is one of those thoughts that sticks in your brain. Similar to the fish itself, really; in the book, it’s a small yellow fish you shove into your ear that takes up home and has the amazing ability to instantaneously translate whatever anybody around you says into your own language, irrespective what galaxy they’re from or what types they are. With a Babel fish in your earhole, the story goes, you can understand anybody else completely. Which you might think would be a delightful thing for universal harmony, but Adams says that “by efficiently removing all barriers to communication between different cultures and races, [it] has caused more and […]
